What Is the Career Outlook for Someone Graduating With a Marketing Degree?

    The future looks promising for graduates with a degree in marketing. Some marketing positions are growing at the national average for other occupations, while other marketing career choices are increasing in demand at a rate that triples the national average. Globalization creates intense competition for consumer dollars, and businesses turn to marketing majors to help them analyze and reach their target markets, while maintaining organizational efficiency.

    According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average U.S. occupation will increase in demand by 14.3 percent through 2020. However, demand for market research analysts is growing by 41 percent, which is almost triple the national average. In other words, 116,600 new market research analyst positions will be added to the 282,700 jobs already in existence. This growth is fueled by an increased demand for data and market research to increase the effectiveness of marketing and business strategies. Marketing research analysts are in such demand that the career is ranked No. 17 on the BLS 2010 list of the 20 Fastest Growing Occupations. Also, "U.S. News & World Report" ranked market research analyst as the best business job of 2013.

    Marketing managers can expect a 14 percent increase in demand for their services, which will add 24,200 new jobs to the existing 202,400 positions already in the market. This career is growing as fast as the average U.S. occupation. Most marketing managers work in professional, scientific and technical service organizations; for manufacturing and management firms; or in the finance, insurance and information sector. Marketing managers are critical to an organization’s revenue, and the BLS reports that they are less likely to be laid off as other types of managers. Marketing managers are ranked No. 9 on "U.S. News & World Report’s" list of the best business jobs of 2013.

    Meeting, convention and event planners have a variety of degrees, including marketing. Growth in this profession is at a staggering 44 percent, which is three times the national average. Currently, there are 71,600 meeting, convention and event planners, and 31,300 new positions will be added through 2020. They work for business, professional, labor and political organizations; hotels, motels and trade show organizations; and colleges, universities and grant-making and giving organizations. As businesses realize the value of bringing their members together for face-to-face meetings, they will rely more on professionals who can plan and execute these hectic meetings at the best price. This career choice lands in 14th place on the list of the best business jobs as ranked by "U.S. News & World Report."

    Many graduates with marketing degrees also pursue careers as advertising and promotions managers. Demand for these positions should increase by 13 percent through 2020, adding 43,800 new jobs to the existing 246,200 advertising and promotions managers already employed. These managers usually work for advertising and public relations firms; in the information industry; for religious, grant-making, civic and professional organizations; and for management and wholesale trade companies. The rise of digital media campaigns, such as websites, social media and live chats, make advertising and promotions managers a vital part of introducing new products and ads, and directing media campaigns.
