How to Get Off of Voice Control on the Kindle Fire HD

by Randall Blackburn

The Kindle Fire HD is shipped with voice control accessibility features, such as Text-to-Speech and Voice Guide. The Text-to-Speech feature reads out the content of reading material in English, and the voice guide feature reads screen selections aloud as you navigate the device. If you have enabled voice control and you now need to turn off these features, you can make the adjustments in the Accessibility Settings menu on the Kindle Fire HD.

    Step 1

Tap and hold the top bar on the screen, and then pull the bar downward to view the Settings menu.

    Step 2

Tap “More” to view additional menu options.

    Step 3

Tap the “Accessibility” option to open the Accessibility menu.

    Step 4

Slide the “Text-to-Speech” toggle to the Off position.

    Step 5

Slide the “Voice Guide” toggle to the Off position.

    Step 6

Tap the back arrow to save settings and close the menu.

    Tips

    • Explore by Touch is another accessibility feature that changes the navigation strategy on the device. When Explore by Touch is enabled, navigate the screen by swiping with two fingers and double-tapping icons to launch apps. Disable the Explore by Touch feature in the Accessibility Settings menu to restore normal navigation.
    • Turn on the Orientation Lock in Accessibility Settings to stop the screen orientation from changing between portrait and landscape when you rotate the device.

    Warning

    • Information provided in this article applies to the Kindle Fire HD 8.9. Instructions may vary slightly or significantly for other models of the Kindle.
